Embarking on the journey to declutter my home feels like a monumental task. The idea of reducing clutter throughout my entire house seemed overwhelming, but as the Chinese proverb wisely says, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." In this blog post, I'll take you through my experience of starting small, focusing on the first day of my decluttering journey that took just 15 minutes and share the home organization tips I found along the way.

Small Spaces of Tension

Clutter had found its way into various corners of my new home, creating stress and a sense of disorder. Deciding where to begin was a challenge. After much thought, I decided to start with a counter in the kitchen that had become a notorious dumping ground for items without a designated place. This small space caused repeated feelings of stress when I entered the kitchen, and made cooking meals not enjoyable. Recognizing the need for change, I decided to start my decluttering journey from this small yet significant space. The "completely gross" box felt like some sort of divine intervention begging me to clear this space.

Taking Action

To tackle the clutter, I started by finding a "home" for items that should stay on the counter. Simultaneously, I decided to part ways with items that had been sitting there unused for over a week. This quick decision-making process helped clear the space efficiently. Additionally, a stick-on tile backsplash, previously purchased but left uninstalled, was utilized to enhance the aesthetics of the counter.

Find a Purpose for the Space

An essential aspect of decluttering is ensuring that the organized space remains maintained. If a space serves a purpose, then it is more likely to remain maintained. In this case, a better setup for tea became the purpose for my kitchen counter. By assigning a specific function to the space, the likelihood of it becoming cluttered again is significantly reduced.

Use Organizational Supplies when Necessary

Sometimes a space needs a few tools to help organize. This not only makes the space visually appealing, but it is easier to locate and sort items. This makes the space easier to maintain, so that in a month or two you are not having to repeat the process again. Links to some of my favorite organization supplies are listed below:

In less than half an hour, I successfully transformed a once chaotic and stressful space into my favorite part of the kitchen. By making intentional decisions about what to keep, where to place items, and adding a purpose to the space, the clutter was replaced with a visually appealing and functional area. It’s been super easy to maintain, and has given me the momentum I needed to keep going. My wardrobe is up next!
